Harbor School - Harbor Bridge (New Castle) PA

The one-room Harbor School (pictured above) was built near the settlement of Harbor Bridge, or simply the Harbor, and opened in the fall of 1917. It was located north of modern Route 422 and just before the bridge spanning the Mahoning River. Miss Eva Locke had been serving as teacher of the older Harbor School, but I believe Miss Elda M. Vance served as the inaugural teacher of the new school. The sturdy brick building had a full basement and a modern heating system. It replaced and consolidated the pupils – up to the eighth grade – of an earlier Harbor School and also the nearby Sankey-Kerr School. Local businessman Arwood T. Eckles played a prominent role in seeing that the school, which cost $3,139, was constructed. The schoolhouse was in service for many years until it was closed in June 1955. The Union Township School Board put the former school building (and several others) up for sale in October 1960 and it was finally sold in early 1963. Over the years the various Harbor School buildings served the local area in conjunction with the several other buildings including the Sankey-Kerr School (closed 1917) and the Mathews School (closed c1935). The Harbor School closed in June 1955 and was later sold to a private buyer in 1963. (c1927) Full Size

  1. I attended this school from 1951/1952 1st Grade and 1952/1953 2nd Grade.
I lived about a mile from the school on 422
and then on the same road as the school.
