Hennon's Greenhouse - Wayne Twnp PA

Text Coming Soon!

Joseph S. Hennon (1847-1918), whose Irish-born grandfather Joseph Hennon was among Wayne Township’s original settlers in 1796, was born on the family homestead (shown above) near Chewton, was married twice, and had five total children. In 1902 he teamed with his son Charles D. Hennon to found a wholesale flower and plant business known as J.S. Hennon & Son. The business was an immediate success and before long they greatly expanded their greenhouse complex. (Photo courtesy of Cam Butchelle Stelter) (c1900) Full Size

Soon after opening the greenhouse business on the family farm (shown above), the Hennon family opened two retail outlets to sale their flowers as well. Charles D. Hennon operated the Hennon Florist in Ellwood City, while his brother Edward A. Hennon operated the Hennon Florist in New Castle. (c1905) Full Size

The sprawling greenhouse complex on the Hennon family farm is shown above. Joseph S. Hennon managed the greenhouse operation until he passed away in 1918. I believe the retail store in New Castle was sold off sometime after Edward’s death in June 1942, and the store in Ellwood City was sold in October 1943. When Charles died in 1946 the business was soon sold to John Modliszewski, who operated it (with his son Jim Modliszewski) as “Hennon’s Greenhouse” for almost three decades. The business was closed down in the early 1970’s and the greenhouses were razed. (c1930) Full Size

This wonderful photo depicts a Hennon family gathering at the farm in Wayne Township. This photo is marked as 1895, but I wonder if it could be from 1904. I found an article in the New Castle News of August 31, 1904, that reads, “The first Hennon reunion will be held at the home of Joseph Hennon, the gardener, in Wayne Township, near Chewton, Thursday, September 22. All friends and neighbors of the family connection are cordially invited to attend… Come with well filled baskets.” (Thanks for Cam Butchelle Stelter for sending in this awesome photo!) Full Size

The old Hennon family farm, first settled by Thomas Hennon back in 1796, is still occupied by his descendants today. (c1970) Full Size

Comments

  1. I was trying to find someone in the Hennon family that might be able to answer a question for me.

There was a Thomas Hennon who married Esther Williamson in about 1919. Thomas then died in May of 1920. DO you have any background on the circumstances of his death and what became of his wife?

    Thanks Chip

  2. This is Great! My husband is a defendant of the senior Joseph Hennon.

  3. “Descendant”
