 The one-room McAnlis School was built in the mid-1880’s on the McAnlis farm west of Wampum. It stood on a knoll at the southwest corner of the intersection of Route 168 and the Wampum-Mt. Air Road. This 1896 photo is identified as the “old McAnlis School,” which was built sometime in the mid-1800’s and replaced in 1915. The teacher, on right with black hat, is identified as Emma Kennedy.  The original building was replaced with a newer one-room schoolhouse (shown above), which stood closer to the road, in 1915. The school, which never had electricity, was heated by a coal furnace and had two outhouses in the rear. It was closed down in about 1945 and sold to back to the McAnlis family. (c1930) |

 A photo of the newer McAnlis School in the wintertime. The school was sold in c1945 and subsequently utilized as a storage facility (mainly hay) for a local farm. The building was destroyed by a fire on the morning of Tuesday, April 6, 1965. (c1930) |

My dad and his siblings started at Oread and then transferred to McAnlis when Glenkirk consolidated some of the one room schools.My dad had climbed up into the belfry to retrieve a ball. Just as he bent down to pickup the ball the teacher rang the bell which caught Dad’s head between the bell and the railing and gave him a knot on both sides of his head. His younger sister and two brothers rode a horse most of the way to school and then turned the horse loose to wander back home on her own. They referred to her as the one horsepower schoolbus.
