The one-room Boyd School was one of twelve such schools operating in Shenango Township in the late 1880’s. Alice Hennon was the teacher for the 1889-1890 school term. Many of the one-room schools were closed when the new Shenango Township Consolidated School opened for classes in August 1927, but Boyd was one of four that stayed open for the time being. I believe it was finally closed about a decade later. It was located somewhere along what is now Boyd School Road northeast of Chewton. The teacher is this photo (back middle) is believed to be Edna Moore of Ellwood City. The boy pictured just to the right of her is Clark Ricer. (1915) Full Size |
