St. Joseph Cemetery - Neshannock Twnp PA

St. Joseph Cemetery is a burial ground associated with the St. Joseph (The Worker) Catholic Church, founded in New Castle, Pennsylvania, as a German ethnic parish in 1888. The congregation initially purchased an existing church on South Jefferson Street and began services there after renovating the building. The church burned down in April 1892 and a new St. Joseph Church was built on the same location and opened in June 1893.

Soon after a seven-acre church cemetery, located off modern-day Route 18 in Neshannock Township, was also established on the old Moore farm. The first interment reportedly took place in June 1895. The cemetery was also utilized by several other Catholic churches in New Castle, including St. Mary’s and Madonna of Czestochowa, until they established their own burial grounds in the coming years. Years later, a new St. Joseph the Worker Church was dedicated in April 1962 on Cascade Street and the old church was demolished.

Among the handful of notable persons interred there are Joseph A. Fleckenstein (1830-1903), a German-born immigrant who became one of New Castle’s most successful businessman, Margaret L. Henry (1878-1940), who helped maintain the Margaret Henry Home for Children and looked after local orphans for almost four decades, and Patrick “P. J.” Flaherty (1878-1948), the civic leader and businessman who helped build the Johnson Bronze Company into a major success. Also interred in an unmarked grave is Frank Jongrass, an Italian immigrant who was convicted of murdering his sweetheart in 1896 and was the first person legally executed in Lawrence County.

The cemetery is located between Route 18 and a residential area and is well maintained – except for a trash-strewn portion of it (which contains graves of young children) bordering a small retail business.

  1. I would like to know if my wife grandfather and grandmother still bury in your cemetery? his name is Joe and Mary Anadrake. I might have spelled the last name wrong. Thank you for your time.

  2. (EDITOR’S NOTE) Glenn, Thanks for your comment and interest. I don’t own the cemetery but I certainly will try to assist you. Can you tell me in what approximate year they died? And where they resided in Lawrence County? Also, can you verify the spelling of the last name on your end? Doing a quick search I doubt its “Anadrake.” A similar surname is Andrade – which is mainly of immigrants from Spain/Portugal but also Italy. Another similar but less common surname is Andrake. If you can get me more information I would be glad to check again.
    Thanks. Jeff

  3. I am sorry, for not getting back to you sooner. My wife got real sick and I had in and out of the hospital. She died on July 17 and I have not been the same.

  4. (EDITOR’S NOTE) Glenn, I am extremely sorry to hear about your loss. You have my deepest sympathies. It was a similar heartbreaking loss (my father passed away in December 2008) that prompted me to start this website as a way to learn more about where I was from. I hope you are hanging in there as best you can during this difficult time. Jeff

  5. I am trying to find death or burial records for my great grandmother, Maria Antonia DeNofrio as well as the location of her gravesite. She died July 21, 1902 and was buried in St. Joseph cemetery. Can you help?

  6. I am looking for the final resting place for Mary Colich Gaydos and also a death certificate with cause of death. She is my paternal grandmother.
Her date of funeral was 8/17/1942

    Thank you for your help

  7. We are trying to find out about Helen Boron born to Sofia and Casimier Boron. We do not know when. But after 1912 and before 1920. We understand there was a diphtheria epidemic after 1912. She died as an infant. We understand she was buried at St Joseph cemetery. We have no birth or death records. We assume she was baptized but don’t know where or when. We were told St. Joseph church burned down along with all records. Is there any way we can find any information on her?

  8. (EDITOR’S NOTE) Kay, There is a grave at St. Joseph’s Cemetery marked as “Boron” – died in 1914. I’ll try to find out more about it. A quick check of the New Castle News from that time period is not turning up much though. Jeff

  9. For anyone trying to find the cemetery, a good address to use with your GPS would be:
    2306 Wilmington Rd.
    New Castle, PA 16105

It is located across the street (State Route 18) from Tanner’s Restaurant.

  10. Hello,

I was just at the cemetery this past Sunday (12/20/15) to try and find the graves of my grandparents Anthony and Rose Chiurazzi. I walked quite a bit of the cemetery but could not find them and no one was working Sunday morning to help.

Can you provide me any information as to the location of their graves. I am positive they are in this cemetery as I remember visiting my grandfather’s grave when I was a small boy (he died in 1968).

    Thank you for any help.

    James

  11. My aunt, Laradia Birch Rose died 12.8.1959 and is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. I am trying to find any record of her husband John W Rose, and if he is buried there too. There were also 2 infant daughters who died (1932 and 1934).

Is there someone to handles the cemetery’s records? Thank you for your time.

    Jane Birch

  12. Attn: Kay Paden Boney – I found Helena Boron’s Certificate of Death on Ancestry.com. She was born on January 28,1914 and died on April 21,1915. Cause of Death was Scarlet Fever. Her parents were both from Austria Hungary and her Mother’s Maiden Name was Jakimowicz.
    If you can access Ancestry.com
