West Ellwood Junction P&LE Station - Koppel PA

Text Coming Soon!

The P&LE opened this passenger/freight station on its mainline at West Ellwood Junction, located along the west bank of the Beaver River, sometime in the 1890’s. It was located in a rural area (with lots of nearby stone quarries) near modern-day Koppel, which was laid out as an industrial town in 1907. In this photo you can see the Koppel (Harmony Streetcar) Bridge and a more distant “newer” P&LE Railroad Bridge, which both opened in early 1915. An article about the growing settlement of Koppel in the New Castle News of April 4, 1912, reads in part, “The town is situated just over the hill from West Ellwood Junction and is reached by means of a long flight of steps.” Just south of this point the P&LE operated (beginning in 1893) and later owned a shortline branch which crossed the Beaver River and reached Park Gate and Ellwood City. The P&LE cut passenger service to Ellwood City in 1933 and I believe this station closed in about 1940. (c1920) Full Size
