 The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE) opened its Pittsburgh-New Castle-Youngstown mainline in early 1879. It’s likely a small bridge was built across the Beaver River at Newport at that time. In 1914 the P&LE made plans to build a new double-track bridge at the site, which likely resulted in the structure seen above. CSX took over most of the P&LE mainline in the early 1990’s and still runs trains over this bridge today. (c2008) |
