Castlewood CMA Church - Castlewood (Shenango Twnp) PA

Text Coming Soon!

The Castlewood Christian & Missionary Alliance (CMA) Church of Moravia Stop (Castlewood), located on Harmony Baptist Road, was chartered in January 1923. The origin of the CMA organization, a Protestant denomination with an unusual beginning, dates back to 1887 when the Reverend Alfred “A. B.” Simpson founded a Christian outreach group in New York City. This church was erected right next door to the Castlewood School and was easily accessible via the nearby Moravia Stop on the Harmony Streetcar Line. A mission was soon opened on Bell Avenue in Ellwood City as well. The first pastor was the Reverend Charles A. Davis, who departed in August 1928 to head up another church in Irvona, Pennsylvania. He was replaced in early 1929 by the Reverend T. J. Keegan, a talented musician who served the church for about three years. The Castlewood CMA Church, which has expanded over the years, is still in service today. (Apr 2012)

  1. I remember this church from the earliest days of my childhood. My grandparents lived on up the driveway behind this church and were instrumental in it’s construction. I remember going there to VBS and services. I remember hearing a lot about that bell out front and about the digging out the cellar for the foundation.

  2. I went to VBS there a few times, too. I seem to remember some kind of festival or fair there in the summers as well. My great-grandfather’s (Eugene Houk) farm was down the road. I think his father, Esli Houk settled there after the Civil War & I think there was around 100 acres. They sold it when I was really young so I don’t remember much. Before he died he was living in one of the small houses on the same side as the church, down by the pond on Harmony Baptist and Rte 65. Used to ice skate there! My grandmother was Adda Houk Yoho. I have a lot of relatives (James – maybe we’re cousins!)around there & in Ellwood. I wish I knew more about them! Good memories about spending time in that area.
