Plain Grove Twnp (Lawrence Co) PA

In March 1849 the entity of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, was formed from parts of Beaver and Mercer Counties and initially contained thirteen townships. The old North Slippery Rock Township, previously a part of Mercer County, was divided in April 1854 to form the new townships of Washington and Scott. In February 1855 the new township of Plain Grove (sometimes given as Plaingrove), which occupied the northeast corner of Lawrence County, was formed from carving away parts of those two townships.

Irish-born Adam McCracken was probably the first person to settle the area back in 1798, and other settlers soon followed with the surnames of the Allen, Blair, Hagan, Harlan, McCommon, and Rogers. The rural township, with the old village of Plain Grove as its centerpiece, has an abundance of mining operations to harvest the abundant gravel. The major north-south highway of Interstate 79 cuts through the township, which is made up of considerable farmlands and also several large state game lands. The population of the quiet locale as of 2000 was 813 people.
