The First Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1893 with twenty-five members led by the Reverend Harvey Bair. The Pittsburg Company donated property at Fourth Street and Park Avenue and a wooden frame church (shown in an architect’s rendering above) was built – after some delay – and dedicated under the supervision of the Reverend Francis B. Cutler in April 1896. (c1902) Full Size |

The church was soon outgrown and it was decided to build a new edifice at a different location. In 1920 congregation purchased property at the northeast corner of Crescent Avenue and Fifth Street. Construction commenced in mid-1925 and the impressive new church (shown above) was in partial use on the first Sunday of 1926. The new church was not formally dedicated until July 10, 1927.
