Text Coming Soon!

Joseph Stiglitz (1847-1925), a Jewish immigrant from Galicia in what is now modern-day Tarnow, Poland, came to the United States in 1872 and settled in Leadville, Colorado – known for its silver deposits. Eight years later he returned to Austria, and brought his wife Chaia (Alice) and young daughter Fannie back to the New York – where daughter Dora was born in 1882. They soon made their way to Wampum, where in the coming years they had four more children named Sara, Samuel, Harry and Jacob. Joseph became a well-known merchant in Wampum with a general store, pants factory, and lumber yard. He was also a leading member of the Jewish community in the region. His son Jacob started a clothing store on Lawrence Avenue in Ellwood City, while his sons Harry and Samuel opened the Stiglitz Brothers clothing and shoe store (shown above) on Main Street in Wampum in about 1906. In August 1916 the Stiglitz Brothers store and its contents were sold to Pittsburgh merchants William Cassler and David Shapiro. By this time most of the Stiglitz family members had relocated to the Detroit, Michigan, area and set up new businesses. Joseph passed away in Mt. Clemens in February 1925. (1912) Full Size
