Harmony Baptist Church & Cemetery - Slippery Rock Twnp PA

Text Coming Soon!

In early November 1849 a small group of Baptists began meeting in a schoolhouse located in Slippery Rock Township in newly established Lawrence County. Nathan Hazen soon donated property and a small wooden church (shown above) was erected in 1853 on the east side of what later became the Ellwood Road. A cemetery was also established as well. (c1910)

The congregation continued to grow and in the early 1920’s it was decided to build a new church across the road – on the west side of the Ellwood Road. The new brick church (shown above) was dedicated on May 10, 1925. In 1962 the church organized a unique summer drive-in church service, where patrons sit in their cars and listen to prayer and Christian music. This brick church was in service until a third church was erected across the road again in 1966-67. (c1930)

In July 1966 the congregation approved plans to erect a new church on the east side of the Ellwood Road, next to the old cemetery. The new church (shown above) was dedicated during special services held on Sunday, April 30, 1967. The addition of an educational-recreational annex was opened in April 1989. The congregation celebrated its 160th anniversary in November 2009 and is still in active service today. (Jul 2011) Full Size

Comments

  1. Please double check location of Harmony Baptist Church & cemetary. I believe it is located in Slippery Rock Twp. not Shenango.

  2. (EDITOR’S NOTE) Good catch! It appears you are quite correct. The church and cemetery sit just inside the border of Slippery Rock Township. Thanks! Jeff

  3. When was the old brick church constructed? Are there any old pictures of it? My great-great grandmother attended church there and her funeral was held there in August of 1907.

  4. There is a very old gravestone with just 2 initials visible on it now: H at the beginning and an H at the end. Any idea whose grave this is? I took a photo of it in case you would like to see it. It did not match any of the names on find a grave website list.
