In 1857-58 a series of revival meeting were held in a grove near what became the village of Energy in Shenango Township. Before too long the Greenwood Methodist congregation was organized and initial services were held in the nearby Warnock School. A wooden frame church was erected in 1860 on land donated by William Harbison and the first pastor was a traveling circuit preacher named John McComb. The church, which also established a cemetery, was greatly improved in 1921 when a full basement and other amenities were added. The building was almost lost to a fire on Sunday, April 24, 1938, but local citizens rallied to fight the fire and save the church. Declining attendance saw the church close in June 1983, when the congregation was approaching its 126th anniversary. The church was later sold to a private owner and is still in use as a storage facility. The cemetery is currently cared for by the Eastbrook Methodist Church. (c1940) Full Size |

I’m curious if the pictures are of all the markers in the cemetery. I have ancestors buried there and am planning a trip north as soon as I get a chance. Do you know if the old records have been transferred to Eastbrook?
Any information would be appreciated. Thank You!

(EDITOR’S NOTE) Marcy, All of these photos are of Greenwood Methodist Cemetery. I’m not certain about the records but it would make sense that they are held at Eastbrook. Jeff

Attended this church 1969-1973 with my Mother and my 10 younger siblings. It was a nice OLD turn of the century church. At one time taught the children Sunday bible school. I remember the painted portrait of Jesus over looking the city hillside. Great story behind that too. A stranger on horseback stopped, did the painting, he left before the men of the church retuned early the next morning. They went to find him to pay him, but he was no where in sight. It was thought it may have been an angel that did the painting. Enjoyed attending that church, until I married there, and moved out of state Sept 1, 1974.
