Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cemetery - Big Beaver Boro PA

The Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cemetery is located off of Norwood Road just outside the borough limits of Koppel in Big Beaver Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. The cemetery, associated with the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Catholic Church of Ellport, is situated alongside property belonging to the Koppel-Big Beaver Sportsmen’s Association.

In the mid-1920’s a small group of Orthodox Christian immigrants from Austria-Hungary started meeting in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. In March 1928 a charter was granted for the “Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of Ellwood City” and later that month construction commenced on a new church in Ellport. The church was quickly completed and dedicated during a ceremony a few months later in July 1928.

I’m not certain when the cemetery property was purchased, but it appears that before – and even after – the cemetery was established most deceased members of the congregation were interred at Locust Grove Cemetery. The earliest references I can find to the Holy Trinity Cemetery are from 1960. The well-maintained cemetery property is mostly vacant and contains less than twenty-five stones/markers in all.
