 The Crawford-Hoyt Cemetery, also known as the Crawford Brothers Cemetery, is a private burial ground located on property adjoining the southern edge of Greenwood Cemetery. It is the final resting place of a handful of New Castle’s wealthiest and most influential citizens. The fenced-in cemetery is located on high ground at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Etna Street and has a commanding view of the downtown area. It was established sometime in the 1840’s or 1850’s by the four sons of Alexander L. Crawford (1815-1890), a shrewd businessman who made a fortune in the railroad, coal, and iron business. In 1872 Crawford’s only daughter Anna married famous industrialist Lewis S. Hoyt (1840-1912), and before her death in 1894 they had three children including wealthy banker Alexander Crawford Hoyt (1881-1975). Many members of the wealthy Crawford and Hoyt families have been interred here over the years. (c2012) Full Size |

there is a lot of history in the Greenwood Cemetery. there is an old veteran portion with a drummer boy from the revolutionary war. There is a new board now that is working to keep the cemetery beautiful. The VFW Post 315 helped clean the veteran portion and cut up a tree that had fallen across the graves. I can give more information if you email me. I do not want to give names out here. There also is a civil war soldier buried that was a prisoner, wounded who became district attorney of Lawrence County and later a congressman.
