William Patterson, of Scots-Irish ancestry, was born in 1824 in what later became Lawrence County. He was an enterprising young man and found employment in the store of J. N. Euwer. He saved his money and soon got involved in the coal business in Ohio and Illinois. He returned to New Castle in 1855 and made a fortune in various businesses in the fields of banking, railroad, coal, tin plate, steel, and iron. He was twice married and had six total children. Years later, as the longtime President of the National Bank of Lawrence County, he was considered the region’s foremost financier. He was a dedicated civic leader and helped establish the Shenango Valley Hospital in the early 1890’s. Patterson, often called the “Grand Old Man,” was as instrumental as any man at guiding New Castle into the modern age. He passed away at the age of eighty in August 1905 and was interred in Oak Park Cemetery. (c1890) Full Size |
